Labor Day BBQ Ribs: Better Than Takeout

  • Author: Karina
  • Total Time: 65 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

These oven-baked BBQ ribs are sticky, sweet, and smoky, offering a takeout-quality meal in under an hour without the need for a smoker or outdoor grill.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 racks pork baby back ribs (about 34 lbs)
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 68 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (sweet and smoky variety)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke (hickory flavor)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Pat ribs dry with paper towels. Remove the silverskin membrane from the back of the ribs using a butter knife and paper towel.
  3. Season both sides of the ribs generously with salt and black pepper.
  4. Slice the yellow onion into thin half-rings and scatter them evenly across the bottom of a large 9×13 inch baking dish.
  5. Place the rib racks on top of the onions, bone-side down.
  6. Wrap the baking dish tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil to seal in steam.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes.
  8. While ribs bake, whisk together honey, BBQ sauce, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, liquid smoke, and melted butter in a small bowl.
  9. Carefully remove the foil from the baking dish (watch for hot steam).
  10. Brush a generous layer of the glaze over the top of the ribs.
  11. Turn oven to broil (high). Place ribs back in the oven, uncovered, and broil for 5-10 minutes, watching closely until the glaze bubbles and caramelizes.
  12. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before cutting between the bones and serving.

Notes

Remove the silverskin membrane for better texture. Use heavy-duty foil to prevent tearing. Watch the broiler closely as honey burns easily. Save the pan juices to spoon over the ribs when serving. Can be made ahead by prepping and wrapping ribs up to 24 hours in advance.
