Fire Cider Immunity Tonic with Horseradish

  • Author: Karina
  • Total Time: 4-6 weeks (steeping time)
  • Yield: Approximately 2 cups of tonic 1x

Description

A potent, raw immunity booster made with raw apple cider vinegar, fresh horseradish, ginger, and spices. This easy-to-make tonic supports immune health and digestion without cooking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480ml) Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother)
  • 1 full head Organic Garlic (about 1012 cloves, peeled)
  • 1 large knob Fresh Ginger Root (34 inches, peeled and sliced)
  • 1 large knob Fresh Horseradish Root (34 inches, peeled and grated)
  • 1 medium Organic Red Onion (peeled and chopped into rough chunks)
  • 1 whole Organic Lemon (sliced into rounds, seeds removed)
  • 1 knob Organic Turmeric Root (2 inches, peeled and chopped) OR 2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Organic Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Thyme or Oregano sprigs (or 1 tsp dried)
  • Raw Honey (optional, to taste, added after straining)

Instructions

  1. Wash all produce thoroughly. Peel the ginger, turmeric, and horseradish. Chop the onion and garlic into rough chunks. Slice the lemon into rounds and remove seeds. Grate the horseradish and turmeric if using fresh root.
  2. Pack the solid ingredients tightly into a clean 1-quart glass jar, layering garlic and onion at the bottom, followed by ginger, turmeric, horseradish, lemon, herbs, and cayenne.
  3. Pour the raw apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until they are completely submerged, leaving about an inch of headspace. Press down to release air bubbles.
  4. Seal the jar with a plastic or coated lid. Label with the date and store in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking the jar every few days.
  5. Strain the liquid through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer into a bowl, squeezing gently if a cloudy tonic is acceptable. Discard solids.
  6. Stir in raw honey to taste if desired.
  7. Bottle the strained tonic in clean glass bottles and store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

Notes

[‘Ensure all ingredients are fully submerged to prevent mold.’, “Use raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the ‘mother’ for best results.”, ‘Fresh horseradish releases volatile oils; wear goggles if sensitive.’, ‘Remove lemon seeds to prevent bitterness.’, ‘Start with 1 teaspoon daily to assess tolerance.’, ‘Can be diluted with water or apple juice if too spicy.’]
