Description
A luxurious and cozy hot chocolate made with rich dark chocolate and topped with broiled, golden marshmallows and a dark chocolate drizzle. This drink offers a perfect balance of creamy, smoky, and sweet flavors.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk (or full-fat oat milk for dairy-free)
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips or chunks (60-70% cocoa)
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed preferred)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 8–10 large jumbo marshmallows
- Optional: Tiny sprinkle of cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons dark chocolate chips (for drizzle)
- ½ teaspoon coconut oil or butter (for drizzle)
- Optional: Whipped cream
Instructions
- Place marshmallows on an oven-safe plate or slice of sourdough toast in a single layer. If using, sprinkle with a tiny pinch of cinnamon. Set aside.
- Pour milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until it reaches a gentle simmer with small bubbles around the edges (about 5-7 minutes). Do not boil.
- Add cocoa powder and dark chocolate chips to the hot milk. Whisk constantly until the mixture is completely smooth and the chocolate is melted.
- Stir in vanilla extract and the pinch of salt. Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary.
- Turn on the oven broiler. Place the marshmallows on the top rack, 4-6 inches from the heat source. Broil for 1-2 minutes, watching closely, until golden brown and puffy.
- Pour the hot chocolate into a heatproof mug.
- Carefully place the toasted marshmallows on top of the drink.
- Microwave the 2 tablespoons of dark chocolate chips and coconut oil/butter in 15-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Let cool for 30 seconds.
- Drizzle the melted chocolate over the toasted marshmallows in a zigzag pattern.
- Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
Use good quality dark chocolate for the best flavor and texture. Watch the marshmallows closely while broiling as ovens vary; they should be golden, not black. For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and dairy-free chocolate chips. The marshmallows should be toasted fresh just before serving.
